What is SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of getting your website higher up search engine’s unpaid rankings (e.g. Google).
There are two types of SEO – on-page and off-page. On-page SEO ensures that your website is optimised and loading times are reduced as much as possible. As well as this, your content will be improved to use the correct code architecture. There are many other factors that affect on-page SEO, such as keeping your content up to date & relevant, making sure images are labelled correctly, and making sure your website is responsive. Off-page SEO is the art of getting your website visible around the web. An example of this is linking between different websites. Google’s algorithms are extremely clever and can pick up on the tiniest details. For example, if your website is mentioned on another website in the same niche as your business, this is very beneficial compared to if you are mentioned on a random blog somewhere that has nothing to do with your market.
Why should I worry about SEO?
If your website is going to be successful, good SEO is a must so you can drive lots of visitors and potential customers to your website. The higher you appear on search engines, the more likely a user is to click on your link and view your website. However, not only do you want to appear high on the list but your listing should also look attractive and draw the user in.
SEO is a constanty changing beast, and search providers often update their algorithms to keep businesses on their toes. Compared to other marketing techniques, such as paid ad campaigns, organic SEO is a cheaper and potentially much more effective process. Paid ads can help push your business forwards, but depending on your target audience, each click you receive to your website can be very expensive.
The vast majority of internet users will not browse past the first 2-3 pages when they are looking for something. This demonstrates just how important it is to get your name towards to top of the search listings. If one of your competitors appears high for different search terms, chances are they are working on their SEO, and you should too.
